Approximately one in every six babies in the U.S. are born with harmful mercury levels in their blood.
Christians are called by our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, to love our neighbors and do unto others as we would have them do unto us. We are thereby called to protect our most vulnerable populations, including unborn children.
Many Christians are unaware of an important threat to the unborn child that must be addressed: mercury pollution and poisoning. Just as we successfully dealt with lead and other toxins in gasoline as a society, so must we now deal with mercury.
We want to publicly thank Senator Alexander, Scott Brown, Sherrod Brown, Casey, Ayotte, McCaskill, and Pryor among others for their courageous votes on reducing mercury pollution that impacts the unborn. EEN is in the process of running thank yous in a number of states. Here's a sample of ads we ran on radio.

As a pro-life, creation-care organization, protecting and enhancing life is at the heart of what we do. A key dimension of this is protecting human health, and that's why we want to stop the mercury poisoning of the unborn.
One in six babies, over 700,000 each year, are born with harmful levels of mercury in their blood, and coal-burning power plants are the largest source of domestic mercury pollution.
Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."
We believe this is an urgent and escalating moral crisis which calls for immediate action!
PROTECT LIFE
Christians are called to protect life, and for us that includes the unborn. Jesus taught us to love our neighbors and treat others as we would want to be treated. Protecting the unborn and children from mercury poisoning and air pollutionis in keeping with Jesus' commands. It is time to stop the mercury poisoning of the unborn.
LONG OVERDUE
The unborn were provided legal protection from toxic pollution like mercury in 1990. We've had two decades of bi-partisan foot-dragging, with the courts finally ordering the federal government to enforce the law and protect the unborn.
TREMENDOUS HEALTH BENEFITS AND JOB CREATION
Besides protecting the unborn from mercury poisoning, the air pollution reduced would help save up to 17,000 lives. Reducing all of this pollution would also create nearly 30,000 jobs during construction and over 9,000 permanent jobs related to operation and maintenance (for more information click on our fact sheet below)
As a pro-life Christian I'm committed to helping end mercury poisoning of the unborn. For over 20 years the unborn have lacked the protection rightfully theirs under the law from mercury pollution from power plants.
At long last, after being ordered by the courts time and again to fulfill their obligations, on March 16, 2011 the EPA finally issued the necessary regulations (known as a "rule").
I pledge to do my part to make sure that mercury poisoning of the unborn ends today! By signing this pledge I agree to:
The implementers (i.e., the EPA) need support and protection from those in Congress and industry who feel protecting the unborn from such mercury pollution simply costs
too much. I pledge to contact my member of Congress in support of EPA's work on mercury poisoning of the unborn.
