Our Response to PREPARE Act

A Statement from the Rev. Mitch Hescox
President/CEO of the Evangelical Environmental Network

We are very grateful that the bipartisan PREPARE Act, HR 4177, cosponsored by Rep. Lance (R-NJ) and Rep. Cartwright (D-PA) passed unanimously out of committee today.  The Act would improve the federal government’s preparedness for extreme weather events.

The most basic task of any government is the protection of its citizens.  This includes protecting us from extreme weather, as the Bible tells us Joseph did for Egypt by preparing the country for the seven lean years by storing up grain during the seven years of plenty.

2017 has amply demonstrated that extreme weather events like Hurricanes Maria, Harvey, and Irma, as well as the devastating fires out West, are incredibly damaging and dangerous.  As our climate warms we can expect to see such extreme events intensified, with an increase in floods and droughts.

With the PREPARE Act, Congressmen Lance and Cartwright are helping us like Joseph did in the Bible.  We strongly support their leadership in helping our country be better prepared for extreme weather events.
