Thanks be to God! Natural Resources Chairman Rob Bishop (R-UT,1) and Ranking Member Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ,3) worked together in a rare but wonderful fashion to move Restore Our Parks and Public Lands Act, H.R. 6510 and H.R. 502 to permanently reauthorize the Land and Water Conservation Fund out of Committee and to the entire House of Representatives for action.
H.R. 6510 would provide a mandatory $6.5 Billion in funding to start addressing the $11.6 Billion National Parks Deferred Maintenance Backlog and H.R. 502 would permanently re-authorize the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) that is set to expire at the end of September.
“In Genesis 2:15 we are told that, ‘The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it,’” stated EEN’s President, The Rev. Mitch Hescox. “Our majestic National Parks, Monuments, and Public Lands are a glimmer of what God created in the Garden of Eden. As evangelical Christians, we are called to steward The Lord’s created wonders,” Hescox continued.
Our National Parks and other public lands are essential to our quality of life. They make available to everyone what belongs to God. They reflect our highest ideals as a nation: that everyone is welcome because all individuals are created equal, endowed with the inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. To step into a National Park and enjoy the beauty of God’s creation is to experience freedom and the richness of life as persons made in the image of God. That’s why over 300,000 pro-life Christians have joined with us to defend and protect these God given National Treasurers. We congratulate and thank the entire Natural Resources Committee for moving both critical and needed pieces of Legislation.
In this time of partisanship, we are pleased and thankful that our elected leaders could work together to save our Public Lands and provide for their upkeep. In what we pray will happen more often, the unselfish compromise between Chairman Bishop and Ranking Member Grijalva displays that Congress can work for the good of the American people and for God’s creation.
However, the work is not finished. We need Speaker Ryan to bring these Bills before the entire House of Representatives quickly pass them and send them to the Senate where similar bipartisan action is already underway.
“I’ll shout it from the mountaintop, Praise God!”
