Statement by Rev. Mitch Hescox:
Congressman Mark Sanford (R-SC, 1st) deserves our thanks and support for being a good steward of God’s creation. Let me explain.
For EEN the greatest challenge of this Century is overcoming climate change while achieving sustainable prosperity powered by clean energy. We believe this is possible and that conservatives have a strategic contribution to make.
That’s why for over a year we have supported Congressman Gibson’s (R-NY) Resolution (H.Res. 424) to build support by Republicans in the House of Representatives for such action.
Congressman Sanford is now a cosponsor of H.Res 424, becoming the first Republican from the deep south to do so.
In our system of government the surest foundation for public policies dealing with long-term problems like climate change is the passage of a federal law designed to address it. Even as we move forward in other ways (e.g. EPA Clean Air Act regulations, state laws), such a law will provide stability and a sense of certainty for the marketplace and wider society.
This is why our country needs House Republicans, like Congressman Sanford and the other cosponsors of the Gibson Resolution, who are willing to show courageous leadership on clean energy and climate action.
It may take some time – years – for us to pass a federal law designed to overcome climate change while achieving sustainable prosperity powered by clean energy. That’s why today we are grateful for Congressman Sanford’s wise and forward-thinking stewardship of God’s creation.
