Dear Administrator Pruitt:
I write you as President/CEO of the Evangelical Environmental Network (EEN) on behalf of my organization and the over 3 million pro-life Christians who have joined with us to fight for a clean environment.
I want to express our strong opposition to your stay of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) methane new source performance standards for the oil and gas sector, specifically the stay to find and fix leaks.
As pro-life evangelicals, we have a special concern for the unborn. We want children to be born healthy and unhindered by the ravages of pollution even before they take their first breath.
That’s why in one of our recent campaigns nearly 92,000 pro-life Christians from 21 affected states called for strong action to reduce pollution from leaks in our natural gas infrastructure and from venting and flaring. These spew out smog precursors, as well as other toxic pollutants and cancer-causing agents like benzene. Studies have shown that smog, VOCs, and air toxics have a disproportionate impact upon life in the womb; for those near production sites the emissions have been linked to birth defects and pre-term births.
As a loving father, we know you would immediately address a gas leak in your own home. And so we ask you – as a father, as a pro-life Christian, and as a citizen of our great country that believes all are created equal and have the right to life, liberty, and happiness – to reverse your decision and allow the new source methane standard to enter into full compliance on June 3, 2017.
