Trump's Environmental Speech: Our Response

“Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight.”
Proverbs 12:22 (ESV)

“Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.”
Ephesians 4:25 (NIV)

As Christians, we know the value of speaking the truth. This is why we are so disheartened by the remarks given today by President Trump. Mr. Trump spent nearly an hour talking about his “environmental leadership.” At the conclusion of his speech he said, “we have only one America, we have only planet...Above all, we will be faithful stewards of God’s creation from sea to shining sea.”

EEN is a ministry that works hard to be faithful stewards of God’s creation. As such, we cannot sit by and let the lies presented to the American public remain unaddressed. Mr. Trump and friends spoke at great length about the importance of healthy air, clean water, and the protection of public lands. We agree that these things are crucial, yet the record of the Administration shows a complete disregard for the protection of our natural resources and a healthy environment. In fact, medical studies have shown that air pollution is actually getting worse. The 2019 State of the Air report from the American Lung Association found that cities experienced an increase in both soot and smog. During the past two years there were 15% more days with unhealthy air in America.

The Administration has worked to destroy crucial standards and rules designed to protect life and create a sustainable future for our children.

Most recently, they finalized their rollback of the Clean Power Plan by releasing the worst climate policy ever that would lead to as many as 1,400 premature deaths per year. The EPA is currently working to dismantle the Mercury and Air Toxics Standard (MATS) which will endanger countless children and pregnant women. Mr. Trump and his friends have opened up our largest wildlife refuge to drilling and exploitation. The President has proposed budgets that would harm our national parks and weaken the EPA. The EPA has proposed weakening methane standards which protect children and other vulnerable communities. Time and again Mr. Trump has demonstrated his commitment to the fossil fuel industry and disregard for the health of children. Today this disregard was on full display.

Here at EEN we will continue to speak the truth and take action. We will continue to defend children from these threats. We will continue to live out our duty as stewards of God’s creation.

“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:18 (NIV)
